The underrated stock survey! Submit your picks for the community to track
Following on the previous tracking post (http://redd.it/i2mmzg) and the highly upvoted request from DJ-Ascii , I've set up this post for another round of underrated or undervalued stock picks. As before, let us know what stock you believe is underrated and a consistent winner that has done well for you, or you believe will do well going forward. In order to make this easier to track please use the following guidelines for submitting.
Only one submission per comment. You can make multiple comments, but please only submit one stock per comment.
Please include at least the ticker and the company name. Feel free to explain why you think this is a good stock.
I'll add these new picks alongside the old survey so as to update you on each portfolio over time. Don't worry about any overlaps. Edit 1: I've compiled everyone who has posted so far, but I'll look out for any final additions tomorrow. The list will then be locked EOD on Friday the 7th of August, and all prices will start from there. Edit 2: All picks have now been locked down and consolidated into the list below. Stocks are sorted in alphabetical order of their company name and the ID corresponds to the approximate order in which they were submitted. The next update will be in 30 days.
For Trading August 12th TSLA 5:1 SPLIT GOLD / SILVER COLLAPSE DJIA CLOSES 450 OFF HIGH Today’s market got off to a slightly higher start on DJIA and S&P-500 but general weakness in the NASDAQ, again. By the end of the day the DJIA -104.53 (.38%) was well off its +363 high and the NASDAQ was the big loser -185.54 (1.69%). The S&P 500 was -26.78 (.80) after being withing a few dollars of a new high, the Russell -9.57 (.6%), and the only winner the DJ Transports +24.59 (.23%). Market internals were 1:1 on the NYSE but 1.5:1 down on the NASDAQ. Volume was slightly higher than average for an August day. The major feature of the day was the massive selloff in the precious metals. Gold was down $125/oz. at the low and finished $1946.30 -93.40 (6%) while the Silver was lower by $3.21 to $26.049 after hitting an intraday low of $24.48. The change at the close was 12%. I would assume that we would see some follow-thru tonight and tomorrow early, but I bought the NEM September $65 / 70 call spread for $1.45. This is basically the same trade I made last month on the August expo $60/65 spread @ $1.30 that we sold @ $3.20. We also had the TBT 9/18 15 calls @ $ .40 that we sold today half @ $ .68, and the second half @ $ .74 just before they fell back to $ .55. Not bad, with YTD now back to +34%. Tonight’s closing comment video https://youtu.be/EvsCZy_K1sw SECTORS: We didn’t have much corporate news today but QCOM won an appeals court ruling on an anti-trust case and the stock ignored the selloff and finished the day $108.83 +2.47 (2.3%). That made it a standout as the rest of technology was hit hard again today. It was the 3rd day down for the NASDAQ since its new closing high at $11,108.07 last Thursday. The biggest news of the late day was the announcement that TESLA (TSLA) declared a 5:1 stock split. While this is really just straight arithmetic, it does create some demand for the shares now, since when the stock split becomes effective at the end of August you would have 5 times the shares at 1/5 of the price. But it does promote the purchase of “round lots” as opposed to “odd lots.” Does it really increase demand? Not really, but most stocks (like AAPL) do seem to rise on the news. TSLA certainly did, closing $1374 -44, and then on the news rallied to its current $1467.20, over $90 higher. FOOD SUPPLY CHAIN was LOWER with TSN +.82, BGS -.46, FLO +.20, CPB -.63, CAG -.49, MDLZ -.49, KHC -.16, CALM +.19, JJSF -.35, SAFM +2.10, HRL -.31, SJM -.84, PPC +.27, KR -.58, and PBJ #33.32 -.37 (1.13%). CANNABIS: was LOWER with TLRY -.95, CGC -.54, CRON -.06, GWPH -3.52, ACB -.14, NBEV -.02, CURLF -.38, KERN -.29, and MJ $12.95 +.01 (.08%). DEFENSE: was HIGHER with LMT +3.03, GD +2.94, TXT -.18, NOC +6.27, BWXT +.22, TDY +1.75, RTX +.16, and ITA $172.14 +.91 (.53%). RETAIL: was HIGHER with M -.16, JWN +.07, KSS +.55, DDS +.66, WMT -1.33, TGT -1.22, TJX +1.08, RL +1.77, UAA +.27, LULU -8.95, TPR +.12, CPRI +.31, and XRT $50.60 -.39 (.76%). FAANG and Big Cap: were LOWER with GOOGL -12.81, AMZN -63.15, AAPL -10.52, FB -5.50, NFLX -14.89, NVDA -10.20, TSLA +50.43, BABA +.87, BIDU +.08, CMG -11.00, CAT +1.23, MSFT -3.,85, BA +.98, DIS +1.86, and XLK $112.00 -1.42 (1.25%). PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THESE PRICES ARE LATE MARKET QUOTES AND DO NOT REPRESENT THE 4:00 CLOSES. FINANCIALS were HIGHER with GS +2.42, JPM +3.58, BAC +.47, MS +1.22, C +1.17, PNC +3.32, AIG +.52, TRV +.80, AXP +1.70, V +1.46, and XLF $25.31 +.29 (1.16%). OIL, $41.61 -.33. Oil was higher in last night’s trading before we rallied in the morning on news of production cutbacks from Iraq. The stocks were HIGHER with XLE $38.20 -.13 (.34%). GOLD $1,946.30 -93.40, was a continuation rally and a new recovery high of $2,089.20, but we collapsed and fell as far as $1,919 -124 before coming back slightly. Tonight, we are currently trading lower again at $1,915.70 – 30.00. While I like the gold down here, I will have to wait and see how it acts overnight. BITCOIN: closed $11,435 -580. After breaking out over $10,000 we have had a “running correction” pushing prices toward $12,000, reaching a recovery high of $12220 yesterday. We had added 350 shares of GBTC @ $10.02 to our position of 400 @ $8.06, bringing our average price to $8.97, but sold 250 shares today @ $13.93. GBTC closed $12.54 -1.15 today. Tomorrow is another day. CAM
For Trading JULY 30th WHERE THE HELL IS STOCKWATCH? “FED UNCHANGED” NAT GAS RALLIES Added UNG calls and MYL calls and sitting on our gold spreads Today’s market got off to a positive start and then gained all day. The FED announcement and the press conference had absolutely no effect on the market as did the House Judiciary cross examination of the CEOs of AAPL, AMZN, GOOGL, and FB. There was nothing new discussed as the congressional questioners got on their soapboxes to mug to the TV cameras. As is usually the case on Fed days, the market just drifted higher and when they got what was expected the market added on to the gains. We also had some economic numbers with pending home sales +16.6%, a lower trade deficit (70.6 vs. 75.3Bil), and a slight decline in mortgage applications. DJIA +160.29 (.61%), NASDAQ +140.85 (1.35%), S&P 500 +40 (1.24%), the Russell +30.87 (2.1%) and the DJ Transports +209 (2.16%). Market internals were positive with NYSE 4:1 and NAZ 2:1, with lighter volume in both. The DJIA was 19 up, 11 down with the biggest winners AAPL +49 and UNH +46 DPs and BA -35 DPs. SECTORS: The disgrace of what transpired with KODK should clearly be investigated. A stock whose avg daily volume is 100,000 trades 1.6MM and makes an announcement of major import and trades 260MM and then moves this dramatically deserves a look…A CLOSE LOOK! Then when it moves up 2000% and has to be halted repeatedly for volatility all day and trades in a range of $17.50 TO $60.00. Forget the political side where a major Republican donor is a director and owns 15% of KODK, this kind of action should be investigated. The lack of protection for investors is glaring! If I had bought even 1 of the KODK calls, the SEC would already have called me!! FOOD SUPPLY CHAIN was HIGHER with TSN +1.27, BGS +.51, FLO +.05, CPB -.03, CAG +.34, MDLZ +.82, KHC +.64, CALM -.23, JJSF -1.31, SAFM +.66, HRL +.28, SJM +1.22, PPC -.39, KR -.12, PBJ $33.70 +.44 (1.3%). BIOPHARMA was MIXED with BIIB -2.99, ABBV +.34, REGN +1.16, ISRG +16.10, GILD -.59, MYL +.86 (5.32% and we own the calls), TEVA +.32, VRTX +.20, BHC +.25, INCY -2.57, ICPT -.30, LABU -2.51, and IBB $137.00 -1.16 (.84%). CANNABIS: was LOWER with TLRY -.54, CGC -.95, CRON -.25, GWPH +.45, ACB -.87, NBEV +.07, CURLF -.40, KERN +.35, and MJ $13.43 -.32 (2.33%). DEFENSE: was HIGHER with LMT +.64, GD +.87, TXT +.07, NOC +2.33, BWTX +.22, TDY -.23, RTX -1.60, and ITA $160.27 -1.31 (.81%). RETAIL: was HIGHER with M +.08, JWN +.10, KSS -.16, DDS +.51, WMT -.97, TGT +.11, TJX +.92, RL +1.33, UAA +.37, LULU +3.11, TPR +.36, CPRI +1.24, and XRT $47.84 +1.32 (2.84%). FAANG and Big Cap: were HIGHER with GOOGL +23.55, AMZN +45.27, AAPL +7.74, FB +3.74, NFLX -3.51, NVDA +11.13, TSLA +25.51, BABA +4.33, BIDU +4.50, CMG +37.87, CAT +2.64, MSFT +2.03, BA -5.44, DIS -.53, and XLK $107.63 +2.02 (1.91%). Oil was lower in last night’s trading before we rallied in the morning. I mentioned in last night’s charts with comments section in the Weekly Strategies letter, that it is a toss-up for a move in either direction. The stocks were HIGHER with XLE $37.68 +.77 (2.09%). GOLD $1,954.50 +10.10. It was a continuation rally and a new recovery high of $1,974.00. I have only the NEM August 65 / 70 spread on in the Gold market. The spread was put on at $1.30 and finished the day @ $2.47. BITCOIN: closed $11,240 +205. After trading back to 8985 we rallied back to close – only $5. Since last week we have closed between 9200 – 92.85 every day with narrow ranges and today was a good start to move higher. A break over 10,000 still sends us higher. We added 350 shares of GBTC @ $10.02 to our position of 400 @ $8.06, bringing our average price to $8.97. GBTC closed $12.41 -.12 today. Tomorrow is another day. CAM
For Trading August 13th TSLA $1,554 +180 (13%) GOLD / SILVER Recover CSCO & LYFT MISS #s Today’s market got off to a slightly higher start on the combination of CPI data and the futures, with all major indexes higher. The NASDAQ was the leader, by far, gaining almost the same point value as the DJIA on an index 60% smaller. At the close the DJIA was +289.93 (1.05%), NASDAQ +229.42 (2.13%), S&P 500 +46.66 (1.4%), the Russell +8.15 (.52%), and the DJ Transports +46.57 (.43%). Market internals were weak with the NYSE only 9:5 UP and the NASDAQ 9:7, and lower volume than yesterday. The DJIA was the same as yesterday, 23:7 but almost the entire gain was in 4 names, AAPL +100DP’s, HD & UNH +46 each, and MSFT +40DP’s while on the downside we had BA-32 and AXP -10DP’s. Tonight’s closing comment video https://youtu.be/3T8DnUEKNaY SECTORS: We didn’t have much corporate news today but after the close we had earnings from both CSCO and LYFT with both reporting losses and giving poor guidance. LYFT in particular was just full of bad news telling shareholders that if the Court of Appeals did not strike down the State of California’s ruling that requires their drivers to be considered employees, that they would suspend all operations in Calif., 16% of their total rideshare business. The stock, already down from its high of $88.60 traded as low as $29.75 and is currently $30.10 -.42. Cisco (CSCO) reported a loss and gave poor guidance and this is the glaring difference between “Old” tech and “New” tech. While CSCO has fallen from an all-time high of $76, and a recent high of $58 to close today $48.10 + .91, it traded down to $44.77 and is $45.04 -3.05 or 6.34%. “New” tech stocks like AMD, NVDA, and AVGO are all at new all-time highs and up triple-digits this year. For Trading August 28th ! New Highs for NAZ & S&P-500 INITIAL CLAIMS OVER 1MM TIKTOK &WMT? Today’s market was another split affair with the DJIA +160.35 (.57%) and the NASDAQ -39.72 (.34%), S&P 500 +5.82 (.17%), the Russell +4.37 (.28%), DJ Transport +79 (.71%), with a gain, second day in a row of the VIX also higher 24.47 +1.20 (5.16%). That lost one is both unusual and ominous in my book. A/D was also split with the NYSE 4:3 UP and NASDAQ 9:8 Down with light volume again. Initial claims were again over 1 million with continuing very slightly lower at 14,535,000, but the big number (although it was just preliminary and changeable) was the decline in Q2 GDP -31.7%. Chairman Powell spoke at the virtual Jackson Hole meeting and made the startling comment that he still doesn’t see any inflation and since they haven’t been able to hit their marks, they are reevaluating the actual definition of what they consider inflation! Clearly, he doesn’t go grocery shopping, or buy kids sneakers or school supplies. What a putz! Like that idiot Wilbur Ross who quoted prices at 7-11 for beer and Campbell’s soup. These people have less than no understanding of what it’s like in the real world. I also returned to my radio show today with a great live interview with the Chief Medical Officer of JANONE (JAN) and it was a great show. This is the link to the audio recording including my discussion of the market and the very exciting story of JAN’s phenomenal NON-OPIOID Pain Med! This is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNCWw2by2wI Enjoy!! Tonight’s closing comment video: https://youtu.be/AQ_FSMkj-Fg SECTORS: The day started with the ABT news of the FDA granting the expedited approval of a $5.00, 15-minute “antigen” test for Covid-19. It is expected that Mr. Trump will announce a deal for $750 million for the manufacture and sale of the test to be ramped up immediately. Never let a good pandemic go to waste during an RNC convention, virtual or not! The stock traded as high as $117 in premarket but could only hit $114 in the real world and while higher on the day, it finished $111.29 +8.10 (7.85%) but nearer the lows. WMT was the power behind the DJIA adding 41 DP’s on the news that it was interested in sharing TIK TOK with MSFT, also a winner adding 38 DP’s too. So, half the net change in those two names. After the close we had numbers from ULTA, a beat top and bottom lines trading to $270.80 and finishing $256.64 +32.69 (14.65%), WDAY also beat and after closing $216.63 +3.01, after adding $20 yesterday on the CRM pop, traded $246 before closing $242.50 +25.87 (12.3%). For Trading August 25th XOM, PFE, & RTX DROPPED FROM DJIA More New Highs for NAZ & S&P-500 TSLA TOPS $2,100!! Today’s market was higher from the start and leveled off around +240 -250 until the last 45 minutes when it powered higher into the close finishing +378.13 (1.35%), NASDAQ +67.92 (.60%), S&P 500 34.12 (1%), The Russell +15.90 (1.03%), and the big winner the DJ Transports +208.17 (1.9%). Internals were positive at 2.5:1 NYSE and 1.4:1 on the NAZ with NYSE volume 5:1 UP ! The DJIA was 5:1 higher and this will be the last time that AAPL will affect the average at the rates of the past since it is price-weighted and AAPL will no be a $100 stock, not $500. The only big loser today was UNH falling $36 DP’s and the gainers BA +74, AAPL +41, and GS +33 DP’s. Our “open forum” on Discord, which allows me to interact with subscribers and others to allow direct questions and chart opinions on just about any stock, continues to grow with more participants every day. It’s a great place to share ideas and gain some insights, and we’ve grown to almost 3000 members. I also did this video over the weekend on a day-trade, (actually 2) that I made in AAPL on Friday. Tonight’s closing comment video: https://youtu.be/eMCD4wjOVh4 SECTORS: While it isn’t necessarily my focus, it’s difficult to not key in on TESLA breaking $2,100 today, trading $2129 and then selling off to $1927 before turning back up to close $2014 -35.78 (1.75%). A week ago, someone in the Discord room asked what I thought, and I gave them an opinion that once we closed over $1,643 that we were headed directly to $2,000-2,100 on a straight shot. I really had a high degree of certainty but thought it would take more than 7 trading days to get to that range! The “possible” vaccine news this morning lit a fire under the airlines; AAL +1.28 (10.5%), DAL +2.53 (9.28%), LUV +2.22 (6.4%), and UAL +3.28 (9.9%). Next were the cruise lines with CCL +1.49 (10%), RCL +2.90 (4.7%), and NCHL +1.18 (7.6%). Personally, I don’t see these names holding up with DAL announcing that unless they get further financial assistance that they will have to fire an additional 1941 pilots. These guys just want us to foot the bill for their disgraceful actions when they could have been preparing for a downturn rather than just lined their own pockets and bought back stock. PaloAlto Networks beat both top and bottom lines but gave soft guidance on next quarters revenues and after closing $267.07 -2.26 it fell further to $254.68 -12.77 (4.7%). The big news on the DJIA is that Dow Jones is making 3 major changes. I could be wrong, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen more than one at a time, but here are the names: Salesforce (CRM) replaces XOM, Amgen (AMGN) replaces Pfizer (PFE), and Honeywell (HON) replaces Raytheon (RTX) which also includes UTX. For Trading August 27th More New Highs for NAZ & S&P-500 DURABLE ORDERS +11.2% Today’s market was interesting in that the DJIA futures, S&P, and NASDAQ were unchanged, and shortly after the open everything went wild! By the end of the day we had several large-cap names that were up double-digit percentages. By the end of the day the DJIA was +83.48 (.30%), NASDAQ +198.59 (1.73%), S&P 500 + 35.11 (1.02%), the Russell -11.02 (.70%) and the DJ Transports basically unchanged. Unfortunately, the internals did not come close to reflecting the gains with the NYSE 1.7:1 DOWN, and even the NASDAQ 1.4:1 lower also. NYSE volume was 9:7 lower also. This is really not what a market making new all-time highs everyday look like. The big number for the day was the astonishingly good growth in durable goods, expected to be +4.8% but came in at 11.2%. Even ex-defense was +9.9%. Capital spending was a gain of 1.9% and shipments rose 2.4%. Remember, these are just preliminary numbers and will change before they are finalized. We wish those in the way of the hurricane the best of luck and safety! It is now looking like the worst storm since the 1850’s, with a storm surge that is being called “unsurvivable!” Our “open forum” on Discord, which allows me to interact with subscribers and others to allow direct questions and chart opinions on just about any stock, continues to grow with more participants every day. One of the issues that most don’t mention is that the drivers being laid off can file and receive unemployment, even though the company has never paid into the plan. For Trading August 26th Is the DJIA an Industrial Average? More New Highs for NAZ & S&P-500 CRM & TOL BEAT ON EARNINGS Today’s market was interesting in that the DJIA futures were higher, S&P was about unchanged, and the NASDAQ was lower, and by the close it was exactly the opposite! The DJIA finished -60.02 (.21%), NASDAQ +86.75 (.76%), S&P 500 +12.34 (.36%), the Russell +2.74 (.17%), and DJ Transports -21.60 (.19%). Market internals were neutral on NYSE at 1:1 while the NASDAQ was better @ 1.5:1 although volume was lighter than yesterday. Consumer confidence was a major disappointment with the number coming in at 84.9, down from the expectations of 93, and last month’s 91.7, the lowest number since May 2014! New home sales were a monster +13.9% v. 1.4 expected and prices added 7.2%. Earnings after the close for TOL (see below) mirrored that sentiment. Tomorrow we have both durable goods orders and weekly mortgage applications. TOL is at the high-end of the price scale and the demand for its upscale homes that can include in-home offices, gyms, and other extras were clearly in demand. The stock is up 300% since the March lows and today’s numbers sent it even higher. The stock had closed $45.06 +.37, but after the report it traded up to $48.50 and at this writing it was $48.20 +2.14 (3%). Also, on the earnings front, the newest member of the DJIA, CRM was higher all day on the DJIA addition finishing $216.05 +7.57 (3.6%) and after the numbers really took off trading up to $244.50 and finishing $243.50 +27.45 (12.5%). After breaking out over $10,000 we have had a “running correction” pushing prices toward $12,000, reaching a recovery high of $12220 Thursday, and after a day of rest in between, we resumed the rally touching $12,635. We had 750 shares of GBTC and sold off 250 last week at $13.93 and still have 500 with a cost of $8.45. GBTC closed $14.75 +1.35 today. Tomorrow is another day. CAM
For Trading JULY 30th WHERE THE HELL IS STOCKWATCH? “FED UNCHANGED” NAT GAS RALLIES Today’s market got off to a positive start and then gained all day. Our “open forum” on Discord, which allows me to interact with subscribers and others to allow direct questions and chart opinions on just about any stock, continues to grow with more participants every day. It is informative and allows me to share insights as the market is open and moving. The link is: https://discord.gg/ATvC7YZ and I will be there and active from before the open and all day. It’s a great place to share ideas and gain some insights, and we’ve grown to almost 3000 members. I also did this video over the weekend on a day-trade, (actually 2) that I made in AAPL on Friday. I think it’s highly informative as a guide to under what conditions these kind of trades in expiring options make sense. The link is https://youtu.be/qIV0G-hP3aM Enjoy!! Tonight’s closing comment video https://youtu.be/rQ3eZ4A4gRw Today’s video on the UNG Trade: https://youtu.be/RBWaSke96O8 SECTORS: The disgrace of what transpired with KODK should clearly be investigated. For Trading August 7th FB +6.5% on ??? Continuing Claims Lower Another New High for NASDAQ Today’s market got off to a slightly lower start on futures and the influence of the European markets but quickly turned higher after the mega-caps came roaring back to add to gains of the last several weeks. The big question of why remains unanswered. They just ran up and while there was no new news, there are plenty excuses. Mr. Z’s market cap gained $46Billion. Market internals were no better than 1:1 on the NYSE and NASDAQ was actually 6:5 down, with volume just average for the summer months. DJIA was just barely positive at 16:14 up with only one standout, AAPL adding 105 DP’s to the average. BA was the only double-digit loser and only barely -15 DP’s. There really wasn’t much news from Washington unless you count Pelosi sniping at Republicans and McConnell trying to explain away his stubbornness. Tonight’s closing comment video https://youtu.be/x3rHFMWfl80 Our Discord link is in the video description.. SECTORS: There was plenty of earnings news around with numbers for BKNG, DDOG, Z, UBER and DBX, but I want to take a moment away from that to make myself clear on the continuing Airline Bailout. I am 100% AGAINST wasting yours and my money so that an industry that absolutely squandered the advantages gained in their expansion and record profitability during the past decade. They made flying a brutally painful and expensive adventure with fees for just about everything other than the lavatories. The Boards of Directors and CEO’s repurchased shares, elevating prices, and self-enriching themselves all at the cost of rainy-day funding, right-sizing their companies and doing anything that made sense to increase their longevity. Now they want to “save 100,000 jobs” that will have to be cut. Here’s a thought, NO WAY! How about an industry that supports millions of people and families that has been beaten down, not of their own stupidity…How about Retail? How many of you know people who no longer have a job in a retail store? What did they do to cause the problem? I’m guessing nothing but stand on their feet 40 hours a week to make sure you found whatever you came in looking for. This is a bailout that should absolutely NOT HAPPEN! They don’t deserve it, and in fact it would make little difference in the scheduling and availability of flights. If you’re foolish enough to be an equity holder in this business that has so badly treated the customers, you deserve to lose your stake. And in fact, I seriously doubt that it will save them anyway!
